It was a great way for students who donned blue and green shirts to showcase their classroom environmental education. They honoured the Earth through action-oriented activities such as recycling, energy conservation and waste management.
“Our students need a Science-based climate literacy and we need to start them young,” said Barbie Marie Tamano Ortiz, Head of Science Department.
A variety of special numbers that focused on eco-friendly lifestyle and environmental awareness wowed the crowd. Among those who graced the 3C’s stage were, Speech and Drama Club’s “Respect for Life”, Year 6A’s “Paraiso” song interpretation, Year 4H’s speech choir,”Selamatkan Bumi Kita” and ECA Primary Ballet’s “Colours of the Wind”.
Moreover, Year 3 students created some items using recycled materials to promote conservation of trees and the planet Earth. Representatives from each class paraded their creations and gave a brief description about their work, made from recycled materials.
Whizzy Tasky winners for each level were also awarded. This competition aimed to improve students’ critical thinking skills in answering questions related to the topics learnt in every subject and were done in series during their homeroom time throughout Term 1. The winners were Years 1G, 2H, 3E, 4A, 5A and 6A.
Kudos to the staff and students of SMSS for spreading the message of Earth Day. It was an engaging and empowering Free Day, indeed.
