As the school efforts to better understand and attend to children with special needs, the school’s newly appointed Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo), Filzah Ali, recently attended a workshop titled ‘Working with ASD Kids: What a Learning Support Assistant Should Know’ at Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam. The workshop, which took place over three days, from 24th June to 26th June 2019, was facilitated by Dr. Nimisha Muttiah, an experienced Speech-Language Pathologist from Sri Lanka. The three-day workshop covered ways of recognising symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as well as some of the assessments and interventions that can be incorporated in the classroom. A cascading session with the teachers of Preschool and Primary sections is hoped to happen in the following year in order to raise awareness.
